04 Nov 2020

The members of the Parliamentary Council would meet for the first time at the Speaker’s Residence at 4 p.m. today, Parliamentary sources said. The Secretary General of Parliament, Dhammika Dasanayake, said that the procedures and formalities of the Parliamentary Council would be the focus of today’s meeting. “The 20th Amendment has not outlined all procedures of the Council. Therefore, we will discuss them at today’s meeting,” Mr. Dasanayake told The Morning. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Prime Minister’s nominee Minister Douglas Devananda and the Opposition Leader’s nominee MP Kabir Hashim are the members of the council. Mr. Dasanayake further said they will discuss nominations to posts if the Speaker has received any nominations from the President.
