Patali’s 43 Brigade opens fertiliser info centre

30 Jun 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake   The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Patali Champika Ranawaka’s new political movement, the 43 Brigade, has launched a special unit called the Sarubima Information Centre to study the economic and social impact of the fertiliser issue on the farming community. Speaking to The Morning, a spokesperson for the 43 Brigade said that the current move was taken especially to voice out concerns regarding the fertiliser issue, where most of the farmers are aggressively protesting against the Government. “The sudden and rash decision by the Government to ban the importation of chemical fertiliser, and the move to switch to organic agriculture without putting in place a middle and long term transitional scheme, has caused immense strain on the social, economic, and cultural spheres of the Sri Lankan agricultural society,” he stated. “Scientists and agriculture specialists warn that it is expected to worsen in the near future. It is expected that there could be a shortage of food supplies and the deterioration of consumer rights, in turn causing considerable hindrance to the average farmer, as well as the consumer. A possibility of a famine is around the corner.” According to the currently available analysis cited by the 43 Brigade, the expected reduction of yield in different crops is as follows: tea by 50%, paddy (rice) by 30-35%, corn by 50%, potato by 30-50%, sugarcane by 30-40%, cinnamon by 25%, betel leaves by 20%, upcountry vegetables by 30-50%, ornamental plants/flowers by 100%, and greenhouse and protected environment crops by 100%. “It is apparent that a social and economic collapse is inevitable. Naturally, the Government will make every attempt to prevent the spread of information on how the farming community is suffering due to its decision. Hence, it is the need of the hour to put in place a mechanism to gather information on the effects of the Government's decision at the ground level and how the livelihoods of average farmers are crumbling.  “The information needs to be processed and analysed in a manner that is resourceful to establish a case against the current decision of the Government. This information will be disseminated among the masses to create agitation and to force the Government to reverse its decision,” the spokesperson added. “We hope to make a database of farmers using the 0113 651234 telephone number and try to understand the issues they face in the field. We are sure that we would be able to give scientific solutions for their issues.” The 43 Brigade also hopes to analyse current issues and create a dialogue among the society and the political environment till they establish a national policy to fight against these issues. Therefore, the 43 Brigade requested the public to inform the said Information Centre about the problems of farmers in their areas. Accordingly, farmers are able to submit their problems through the same telephone number. Structured under the theme of “not a number, but a generation”, this political movement is based on the generations of students who had benefited from the free education policy which was launched in 1943.
