Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka's arrest is a part of the government's political witch hunt against the opposition, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said today.
Ranawaka was arrested yesterday(18) over an accident that took place in 2016, which left the victim severely injured.
Kariyawasam said Ranawaka's arrest was illegal as the police had not followed relevant protocol when arresting a parliamentarian.
"The police had not informed the Speaker nor the Deputy Speaker before the arrest was made."
He said the Deputy Speaker was only informed after the arrest was made.
Kariyawasam said 40 to 50 police men had surrounded his house and taken him into custody.
"The Government is misusing its power and we have information that more parliamentarians will be arrested," He said.
