PC polls key item on next cabinet agenda
The provincial council elections have been listed as the number one item on the agenda of the next Cabinet meeting, The Sunday Morning learnt.
President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to submit a cabinet paper calling for the elections to be held soon.
The cabinet paper proposes that the elections be held under the old system, as the new system does not have the full backing of Parliament.
Cabinet is scheduled to meet on 5 March at the Presidential Secretariat.
A government source, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the Government was prepared to hold the provincial council elections soon and would not oppose the cabinet paper.
A memorandum on the provincial council elections was initially discussed on 26 February and the memorandum will now be presented to the Cabinet for approval.
The memorandum calls on the Government to hold the provincial council elections at the earliest possible date.
It notes that the delay to hold the elections has resulted in huge public discontentment with the President and the Government.
