By Maheesha Mudugamuwa Health authorities yesterday (5) assured that the issues that prevailed regarding PCR testing in Sri Lanka have now been sorted out and therefore, PCR tests are being carried out with the maximum capacity. Speaking to the media, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said there were delays in releasing PCR test results with the malfunctioning PCR machine at the Mulleriyawa hospital in recent days. The machine has now been restored and examination of delayed PCR tests is underway, he. said It is alleged that there were not enough PCR testing facilities in Colombo, Kurunegala, Kalutara, and Kegalle where the most number of Covid-19 patients have been reported. Steps have been taken by the Ministry of Health to introduce the rapid antigen test for Covid-19 in Sri Lanka to expedite the testing process of suspected persons by providing test results within a short period, according to Deputy Director General of Laboratory Services Dr. Ananda Jayalal. Rapid antigen testing has been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO), through which test results could be obtained within 10-15 minutes.
