An individual attempting to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing in Bandantara in the Matara-Thihagoda area has died after being struck by a Police jeep, stated the Matara Police.
The accident had occurred when the vehicle attached to the Thihagoda Police was transporting a suspect to the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
The victim, who is a 75-year-old resident of Thihagoda, had died upon admission to the Matara hospital.
The Police officer who had driven the vehicle at the time of the accident has been arrested by the Matara Police.
