Delta variant detected in Kahathuduwa

Kahathuduwa Medical Officer of Health Dhanuka Pathmaraja said that a person infected with the Delta variant of Covid-19 has been identified in the Jayaliyagama area in Kahathuduwa. The 47-year-old man has been identified is a worker for a leading construction company in the Slave Island area in Colombo. The infected person has been referred to the Polonnaruwa Covid Treatment Center. About 50 families in the area, including his mother, wife and son, have been quarantined and traffic restrictions have been imposed on the Jayaliyagama Road area. Commenting on this, Medical Officer of Health Dhanuka Pathmaraja said, “The Covid-19 Delta strain has been identified in Kahathuduwa. It was learned that he was a mason and worked for the Colombo Main Construction Company. We suspect that he may have contracted this type of virus from the construction industry," The Medical Officer of Health said that they also learned from nighttime observations that his neighbors had not been in close contact with him in the past. "Also, the Epidemiology Unit has been instructed to conduct about 100 random PCRs in the area. Accordingly, measures have been taken to prevent the virus from spreading from these individuals until the completion of these tests," he said.
