Petition against Acting IGP: Demand for promotions

24 Jun 2020

A group of 366 police sergeants have filed a petition before the Court of Appeal seeking a writ order to be issued on the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to promote them to the rank of Sub Inspector since they have completed 30 years of service. Several others including the Acting IGP and the Attorney General (AG) have been named respondents in the petition. The 366 police sergeants have pointed out that they completed 30 years of service and are now over the age of 50 years. A circular had been issued by the Acting IGP on 9 May 2019 calling for the promotion of the police sergeants who had completed 12 years of service as of 31 December 2018, to the post of Sub Inspector. However, the petitioners have noted that they had not received the relevant promotion as yet. The petitioners have therefore requested the court to issue a writ order to promote them to the rank of Sub Inspector.
