Petition filed requesting suspension of Presidential Elections

Former Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva today filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court requesting that the gazette notification for the November 16 presidential election be suspended. The petitioner has also  requested that the Elections Commission's decision to call for nominations on October 7 be suspended as well. The petitioner states that the term of office of the current President is 6 years and if it is limited to 5 years it would have an affect on the sovereignty of the people. As respondents to the petition are Mahinda Deshapriya and members of the commission.
