BY Buddhika Samaraweera  Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana said that if the people are not interested in obtaining the booster third dose of the US-German-manufactured Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine before July of this year, there is a risk that the said vaccine doses imported to Sri Lanka will expire.  Speaking to the media yesterday (24), he said that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses that are currently available in the country are due to expire from July 2022. “The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses that were imported to be administered as the booster third dose are due to expire from July 2022. Therefore, we hope that the people will obtain the booster third dose before then. Otherwise, there is a risk that the vaccines will expire,” said Prof. Jayasumana. He also said that about 14 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines had been imported to Sri Lanka to be administered as the booster third dose, adding that nearly five million of them had been administered to the public by now. He added that there are nearly 11 million more Pfizer-BioNTech doses in the country. Meanwhile, adding that the booster third dose is now being administered, Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid-19 Disease Control State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle on Sunday (23) urged all eligible to obtain the booster third dose, especially those over 60 years of age and those suffering from various ailments, at the earliest, in order to bring the Covid-19 pandemic situation under control. She said that the country is now fully open and that the people should therefore act responsibly in order to control the pandemic situation.
