Pfizer doesn’t cause impotence, subfertility: Health authorities

18 Feb 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Health experts have denied reports to the effect that receiving the booster third dose of the US and Germany-manufactured Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine causes impotence and subfertility. Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (17), Consultant Physician Dr. Priyankara Jayawardena said: “The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine has been given to nearly one billion people worldwide so far, but it has never been confirmed that it can cause impotence or subfertility.”  He further said that if the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine causes such conditions or any other serious side effects, developed countries would already have proven it by testing. He added that the vaccine could not have been given to nearly a billion people in a number of countries, including developed countries, if it actually causes such conditions. Sri Lanka is currently administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as the first, second, and booster third Covid-19 vaccine doses (other vaccine makes are also given as the first and second doses while the booster third dose is given exclusively with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine). According to the Epidemiology Unit, the health sector, as of 15 February, has administered a total of 2,375,381 Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines as the first dose, 620,023 as the second dose, and 6,214,639 as the booster third dose. Meanwhile, Consultant in Clinical Immunology and Allergy Prof. Suranjith L. Seneviratne, on an earlier occasion, told The Morning that there is no evidence that the Covid-19 vaccines could cause impotence or subfertility. However, he added that if a person develops “long Covid-19” (signs and symptoms that last for longer than four weeks after contracting Covid-19), they could be more likely to have such conditions.
