PHIs complain: Navy not providing information

11 May 2020

 Navy deny PHIs' allegation The Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL) yesterday (10) alleged that the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) was not providing information about the Covid-19-positive navy personnel currently being quarantined at naval premises countrywide. PHIUSL Secretary M. Baalasuriya told The Morning that the PHIs of the area should be informed of any Covid-19 positive patients and their whereabouts according to the Quarantine Act. “PHIs are working at grassroot levels and all government authorities are evaluating the data collected by us. When we are not informed about cases, we have no data, and as a result it poses a serious threat to the community," he noted. Further, Baalasuriya said that not providing sufficient information as stated in the Quarantine Act is accounted as a violation of law. When asked whether the PHIUSL had communicated to the Navy the necessity of informing them, the Secretary noted that the Navy should inform them of all data and it was not necessary to communicate the fact to them separately, as it applies to each and every citizen in the country. “We are trying to prevent any sort of community transmission of the coronavirus, and for that purpose it is important to know of all data regarding positive patients,” he stressed. Meanwhile, when The Morning contacted Navy Spokesman Lt. Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara, he denied the allegation levelled against the Navy and claimed that the Navy was providing all necessary information to all authorities. “If there is any issue in receiving that information, the PHIs should communicate it to the Navy,” he added.
