PHIs intensify TU action: GMOA locks horns with PHIs

20 Jul 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The intensified trade union action launched by the public health inspectors (PHIs) entered the fourth day yesterday (20) due to the failure of health authorities to address the demands of the Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL), The Morning learnt. It is also learnt that Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi was not ready to apologise for a statement which was allegedly made by her during a meeting last week, as she is vehemently denying that she had stated so. However, the PHIs launched the trade union action last Friday (17) based on a statement made by Wanniarachchi. Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) claimed that the PHIs’ trade union action was an arbitrary action as the whole country was facing the Covid-19 threat. GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said that there were many trade unions and professional associations in the country holding back their grievances as it was an obvious fact that a government could not provide solutions for all problems while countering the threat from the pandemic. Meanwhile, the PHIUSL stressed that the pressure brought in by the GMOA has made a negative impact on the discussions between health authorities and the union. PHIUSL Chief Upul Rohana told The Morning that several meetings, held between the union and Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Anil Jasinghe, were unsuccessful. However, the union warned the Government of continuing their union action until their demands are met. When contacted by The Morning, Ministry of Health Media Spokesman Viraj Abeysinghe said that health ministry officials were of the opinion that the PHIs currently have enough power to fulfill their duties. “The powers of the DGHS have been devolved to the PHIs through MOHs (Medical Officers of Health) to control the spread of Covid-19 around the country under the Quarantine Act,” Abeysinghe said. Accordingly, discussions are underway between the two parties. The PHIs who have initially withdrawn from Covid-19-related duties have now withdrawn from the duties of all communicable diseases, including dengue.
