PHIs warn of Covid-19 spread in schools

10 Jan 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera  The Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) has stressed that parents, teachers, and all other parties should act responsibly as Covid-19 could spread among schoolchildren with the normalisation of academic activities at all schools from Grades One to 13, starting from yesterday (10). Speaking to the media yesterday, PHIU President Upul Rohana said: “Parents in particular have a major responsibility to prevent their children from going to school if they have any Covid-19-related symptoms. Also, do not send your children to school if someone at home has contracted Covid-19.” He added that teachers and other staff in schools islandwide have been made aware of the need to take immediate action if any child shows symptoms of Covid-19 at schools. Speaking further, Rohana said that in the current situation, the responsibility of protecting children from Covid-19 lies with all parties, including parents and teachers, adding that schools can continue to be run only if everyone acts responsibly. Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena last week granted approval to the Education Ministry to normalise academic activities at all schools from yesterday onwards. Earlier, the Education Ministry had given instructions to summon students in batches to classrooms with more than 27 students. Meanwhile, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated last week that the Health Ministry would take steps to issue health guidelines in order to maintain schools under normal conditions, taking into account the new norm of the country.
