Pilot project to be launched in WP to arrest drivers under influence of drugs

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that a pilot project will be launched in the Western Province within the next week to investigate and arrest persons involved in driving under the influence of drugs.
Ajith Rohana made this statement in an official statement issued to the media on May 18. He further said that although police used to check vehicles to fine those under the influence of drugs, in the future it is possible to identify and arrest persons who are driving under the influence of drugs. He said that an agreement has been reached with the National Council for Road Safety to reduce traffic accidents in the country within a period of five years and that the Council will provide equipment to the Sri Lanka Police to check drug addicts. Accordingly, arrests will be made in the future for driving under the influence of cannabis, heroin or any other narcotics. The number of deaths due to fatal road accidents yesterday (17th) is 10, although 6 of them were previous fatal accidents, the number of injured died yesterday, the DIG said. Ajith Rohana requested that steps be taken to ensure road safety as public transport services are operational despite the restrictions imposed on roads at this time.
