Piyavi and Rasara: A brother and sister who are best friends

15 May 2022

By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna Piyavi and Rasara, aged nine and four, from Borella are a brother and sister who are glued to each other. Piyavi, the older brother, considers it his responsibility to protect his little sister. Rasara, the little sister, is always helpful and makes a really good play pal for Piyavi. Piyavi and Rasara, during a chat with The Sunday Morning Little Stars, spoke about how they help each other.    Piyavi Moditha Hewapathirana   Q: Piyavi, tell us more about yourself. A: I am a grade four student of Nalanda College, Colombo and I reside in Borella with my parents and my little sister Rasara. I do swimming and chess in school. I play cricket at home. Nangi (younger sister) joins me when I play cricket and for most of the other games I play at home. I also love playing with LEGO. It is my favourite thing to do. I also like to create things from disposables.   Q: What are the things you use to make crafts? A: Anything actually. I make use of many things that my mom throws away after doing groceries like toothpaste boxes, milk cartons, etc. I usually make vehicles like lorries, cars, and trucks. That’s what I love to make using LEGO too.    Q: It sounds like vehicles are among your favourite things. A: Of course. I love to observe different types of vehicles on the road. I like to watch how they carry out their functions. Then I try to recreate them at home using used boxes. I recently made a bus. I made an ambulance using a toothpaste box when we were stuck at home due to the pandemic. Everyone at home said it looked like a real ambulance.    Q: Who taught you how to do these crafts? A: No one. I learnt it myself. I just try them out when I get a thought about building something and it usually works out.    Q: When did you start swimming and chess? A: I started to learn both when I was in grade one. But unfortunately, I couldn’t continue both due to the pandemic. I learnt both at school. I restarted both sports recently at school. I’m very excited.    Q: What is your favourite piece in chess? A: It’s the knight. The knight plays a great role in chess. I have a lot more to learn about how to use the knight to win a game.    Q: You said reading is also one of your hobbies. A: Yes. I mostly read Sinhala story books. Among my favourites are Hath Pana, Magul Kema, and Heen Saraya.   Q: What do you teach your sister? A: I taught her how to ride the bicycle, it’s something both of us enjoy doing together. I teach her letters sometimes and also teach her how to draw and mix colours. She is very obedient most of the time but sometimes she becomes a little naughty.   Q: What do you do when she doesn’t listen to you? A: I try not to get angry. She is still very small. I try to ignore her. There are times when we fight but we can’t stay mad at each other. She will come back to play with me after a little while. Most of the time I am also okay to play with her again.    Q: Is there anyone you want to thank for supporting you? A: My parents and my teachers at Nalanda College. They are my biggest helpers.   Q: What is your ambition? I want to become an engineer who builds different things.    —-------   Rasara Jayangee Hewapathirana   Q: Rasara, tell us a little bit about yourself too. A: My name is Rasara. I am four years old. I attend the Sri Lanka Air Force Preschool in Borella. I have a lot of friends there. My mother’s name is Aruni Disanayake and my father is Sumudu Hewapathirana. I have one older brother.    Q: Can you tell us about the activities you do at your preschool? A: We learn letters, we play, and we learn how to draw and colour. Sometimes we sing songs too. My favourite part is going to the park to play.   Q: What is your favourite colour Rasara? A: My favourite colour is pink. I do not have many pink dresses. I have a lot of purple dresses. Purple is a colour I love too.    Q: Do you know your brother’s favourite colour? A: I think it’s blue… No, his favourite colour is green.    Q: Is it true that you can ride a bicycle very well? A: Yes. My ayya (big brother) taught me how to ride a bicycle. He sometimes asks me to sit on the bike and not to peddle. He will then walk around pushing the bike while I am on it. I love to do that.    Q: What else do you do with your brother? A: He teaches me to make crafts. We recently made crafts using coconut shells. He taught me how to clean the shells. He also teaches me how to make flowers and butterflies using paper. We also watch cartoons together. My ayya is my best friend.    Q: What would you like to do when you are older, Rasara? A: I’d like to become a doctor. Doctors take care of sick people.
