  • G.L. implores teachers to co-operate
  • Aesthetic subjects practicals pending despite all arrangements
  • 622,000 students affected
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has requested teachers and principals to assist in releasing the results of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) examination of 2020. Addressing a media briefing held yesterday (10), he noted that the results could not be released because of the teachers’ and principals’ continuing withdrawal from the practical examinations-related duties pertaining to the O/L examination. "Nearly 622,000 students sat for the O/L examination and their results could not be released due to the teachers withdrawing from the practical examinations," he reiterated. Therefore, he urged the teachers not to embarrass students through an unprecedented level of trade union action taken against an issue that has been prevailing for 24 years. Speaking further, Prof. Peiris noted that students should not be oppressed in a background where all the necessary arrangements have been made to hold the practical examinations for the O/L aesthetic subjects. The practical examinations of the O/L examination were scheduled to commence on 26 July. However, as another trade union action, in protest over the Government's failure to provide a solution for the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue and other issues of the education sector, nearly 5,800 teachers and principals had decided to withdraw from duties pertaining to the said practical examination. The O/L examination of 2020 commenced on 1 March 2021 and went on for nine days at 4,513 islandwide examination centres.
