PM appears before PCoI

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe appeared before the the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCOI) today to provide a statement over a misappropriation inquiry carried out on a building obtained for rent by the Agricultural Ministry.

Following  the inquiry session the Premier tweeted,

“I provided evidence at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCOI) investigating fraud and corruption this morning. This is the second independent commission that I have appeared before in my official capacity as Prime Minister.  We will continue to ensure accountability.”

The PCOI had summoned the Prime Minister to appear on September 12 but he had informed the PCOI that he is unable to appear on that date. As a result the PCOI had asked Wickremesinghe to appear today(16).

The Agriculture Ministry had vacated its building in Battaramulla in 2015 after the Prime Minister had put forward a cabinet proposal to use the building for the activities of 17 Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committees.

Accordingly, the Ministry had then purchased a building owned by D.P.A Jayasinghe Company by paying a massive monthly rent of Rs 21.5 million.
