19 Feb 2021

  • To probe malpractices, injustices against women

  • Requested by female MPs from both sides

By Dinitha Rathnayake and Hiranyada Dewasiri   The Women Parliamentarians Caucus has requested for a parliamentary committee to investigate the malpractices and injustices against women in Sri Lanka, which is expected to be established on 9 March to coincide with the International Women’s Day celebrations on 8 March, The Morning learnt. Speaking to The Morning, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Wijeratne said that they will put aside political differences and stand together to protect women against malpractices and injustices. “If the rights of women are infringed at their workplace or elsewhere, the committee would be able to make a request from the Speaker of Parliament to start an investigation regarding the matter. This committee will also discuss the relevant issue with the parties involved and come to a decision,” she added. With the approval of the Speaker, the establishment of this committee is expected to be announced on 9 March in line with International Women's Day, Wijeratne said. She pointed out the need for a parliamentary committee with full powers to investigate various forms of violence, discrimination against women, as well as the incidents pertaining to women in their profession. Although it is said that women are treated equally, she pointed out that being a woman is discriminated against in various spheres of society and that this committee will therefore be able to overcome the obstacles of progress on the basis of women's skills, abilities, and qualifications. The specialty of this committee is that it will consist of both female and male members. When queried regarding the Speaker’s approval for the committee, she said that it is yet to be communicated.
