Police clampdown on hate speech

29 Apr 2020

The Police have commenced an operation to curb and monitor hate speech on social media and have warned of immediate arrest if identified. Police Spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne told The Morning that there had been an increase in religious hate speech on social media recently. “We saw a rise in religious hate speech in the past few weeks and have begun monitoring it,” he said. He said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was carrying out the operation. “A cyber crimes team in the CID is handling the initiative and have already identified several leads,” he noted, adding that a person could be imprisoned up to seven years if found guilty. “Severe punishment can be meted out under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This is a serious offence,” he stressed. By Skandha Gunasekara
