Police enforce strict measures

14 May 2020

 People continue to disobey regulations The Police Media Unit said that from 6 p.m. on 20 March to 12 noon on 13 May, a total of 53,081 persons have been arrested for violating the quarantine curfew regulations and 14,088 vehicles have been seized. With the resumption of work across the country on Monday, 11 May, the workforce returning to their offices faced various issues due to the miscommunications that took place on Sunday, 10 May, which were caused by multiple institutions issuing statements on the curfew updates and on returning the country to normalcy amid Covid-19. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana on Tuesday (12) said that they observed that many had not followed the health guidelines or obeyed the quarantine regulations that were in place for the Colombo and Gampaha Districts, which are still in place under indefinite curfew. “When the commercial capital opened for the returning workforce and specific guidelines were issued for them to follow while using public and private transport to get to their respective workplaces, we observed that many had disregarded them. Our officers had to advise these people to follow the guidelines,” DIG Rohana said. To restore order, especially in the Colombo and Gampaha Districts, the Sri Lanka Police deployed officers in civilian clothing to monitor the movements and behaviour of the public. Even with heightened observances between 6 a.m. and 12 noon on 13 May, a total of 369 persons were arrested and 219 vehicles were seized for not following health guidelines and violating quarantine regulations across the country. Additionally, the Sri Lanka Police was to also make use of the CCTV network, which was installed within Colombo city limits, to monitor vehicular and public movement within the day. The Police are to take legal action against all who were arrested for violating the curfew and quarantine laws since March, DIG Rohana reiterated.
