A three-day special islandwide operation commenced yesterday (22) to inspect vehicles with worn-out tyres, with vehicles found guilty liable for a fine of Rs. 3,500.
Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana noted that the condition of the vehicle is one of the other reasons for motor traffic accidents.
“The Police would conduct special operations till tomorrow (24) to detect vehicles which are running with worn tires. If found guilty, they would be liable for a punishment of a fine of Rs. 3,500,” he added.
Additionally, an amendment had been introduced to Section 145 of the Motor Traffic Act in 2009, according to which, if a person causes an injury to another while driving a vehicle with worn-out tires, he/she is liable for a fine of Rs. 25,000 and/or a term of imprisonment.
DIG Rohana added that the number of deaths and those injured in connection with motor traffic accidents has been increasing and that apart from worn-out tires, two other main reasons are negligent driving and driving under the influence.
