  •  To enforce Court order prohibiting presence within 50 m radius of slain PM’s statue
BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Police is to take action against those who gather around the statue of slain Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike at the Galle Face Green in Colombo, in violation of the order issued on Wednesday (20) by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s court prohibiting anyone from assembling within a 50 m radius of the statue. When contacted by The Morning, Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said that the Colombo Fort Police would be taking necessary action against those who violate the said court order and gather near the statue. Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday (21) that the protestors at the “GotaGoGama” protest site which demanded the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and is now known as the “RanilGoGama” which demands the resignation of newly appointed President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who were staying near the Bandaranaike statue, had vacated the latter area, as of last evening. The Colombo Fort Police had reported to Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage on Wednesday that a certain group was preparing to topple or damage the Bandaranaike statue located at the Galle Face Green. While reporting the matter, the Police had requested for an appropriate order in order to ensure the safety of the statue. The Chief Magistrate, who considered the request, issued an order prohibiting anyone from gathering within a distance of 50 m from the statue. Following the issuance of the Court order, Police security had been tightened around the Bandaranaike statue, and in the videos shared on social media platforms, nearly 50 Police and Police Special Task Force officers were seen deployed around the statue. Bandaranaike was initially a member of the United National Party (UNP) and later founded the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). In 1956, he became the fourth Prime Minister of the Dominion of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). He served as the Premier until September, 1959, when he was shot dead by a Buddhist monk in Colombo.
