The Colombo Magistrate Court has granted permission for police to detain MP Rishad Bathiudeen's wife, Father-in-law, brother-in-law and the broker who brought the domestic worker to the MP’s residence for 48 hours for further questioning.
This comes after Rishad Bathiudeen’s wife, who was arrested along with three other suspects over the alleged abuse of an underage domestic aide at the residence of the MP was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court this morning (24).
Bathiudeen’s father-in-law and brother-in-law as well as the agent who provided them with the underaged girl for domestic work have also been arrested.
On July 15, a 16-year-old girl, who was serving as a domestic aide at the Bathiudeen residence, succumbed to severe burn injuries while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. She had been under medical care for 12 days since her admission to the hospital on July 03.
The judicial medical officer who conducted the post-mortem on the girl’s death concluded that she had been sexually exploited.
