Political crisis: Independent group to meet tomorrow

  • SJB and TNA groups to also meet tomorrow and on Tuesday
By MIA The group of 40 independent MPs in Parliament is to meet tomorrow (18) to discuss the next course of action to be taken with regard to the current political and economic crises, it is learnt. Leaders of the group met last evening (16) to discuss the issues that need to be taken up for further discussion and decision tomorrow. The group of independent MPs consists of 13 MPs from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), 16 MPs representing the group of 10 (G-10) governing alliance leaders, nine MPs from the governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) independent group, and two MPs from the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC). However, the CWC has already communicated that the party will decide on any decisive move after considering the alternative economic plans presented by either the Opposition parties or the independent group. Meanwhile, the parliamentary groups of the main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) are to also meet tomorrow and Tuesday (19) respectively. It is learnt that the SJB will discuss the submission of the No-Confidence Motion (NCM) against the Government to the Speaker while the TNA is to discuss the party’s stance on the NCM moved by the SJB.
