Political reform essential for international support: Kiriella

07 Jun 2022

Implementation of political reforms is key to receiving the much needed support for the country from the international community, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella noted. Kiriella made this comment in parliament during the adjournment debate on the current situation in the country. The opposition whip noted that the proposed constitutional amendment by the government is at a standstill while the international community is closely watching the steps taken to bring about political reforms. He went on to say that Sri Lanka is the only country that has a President who cannot be held accountable and is above the law. "Is there one country, one law in this country?" he questioned. After citing examples of leaders in other countries who have faced litigation while in power as well as some who have stepped down from their posts when found to have done something wrong, Kiriella claimed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was directly responsible for the food crisis faced by the country due to the organic agriculture policy pushed overnight by him without proper consultations.
