Political Victimisation report threat to democracy: Eran

01 Feb 2021

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) claimed yesterday (31) that the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into incidents of political victimisation containing the names of several Opposition politicians and senior police officers is a threat to democracy. The report has named United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, SJB parliamentarians Patali Champika Ranawaka, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Jathika Jana Balawegaya Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara, SJB parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said, addressing a press briefing held at the Opposition Leader’s Office yesterday (31 January).   “The duty of a commission includes finding out new information and taking measures to allow the court to resolve the relevant matters; it does not include acquitting the accused or identifying new accused. Due to these practices, various persons such as Udaya Gammanpila, Basil Rajapaksa, and Pillayan (Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan) were freed. We categorically condemn these acts, and such policies should be rejected completely. These cases should be heard in the courts. In addition, independent institutions are being militarised. These are weaknesses in the current administration.” Responding to a question raised by a journalist, he added that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa should reveal to the country his personal opinion about the Colombo Port’s East Container Terminal (ECT).  “We have not been shown the ECT’s agreement, but the President went on to issue a gazette notification declaring the port services an essential service. A trade union leader said that there is a plan to recruit 220 persons to port services secretly.”   He added that the SJB would support any efforts to revive the economy of the country. “As the main Opposition party, we will expose the reality of the economic crisis the country is going through, and will extend our fullest support for the country’s economic revival,” he stressed.
