Political victimisation report to Parliament

By Pamodi Waravita   The report by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing incidents of political victimisation that had occurred between 2015 and 2019 is due to be handed over to Parliament today (20), Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (19), Rambukwella said the report would be submitted to Parliament at the next parliamentary session, which is today. “I cannot disclose the details of the report, as it must be first submitted to Parliament,” Rambukwella further said. The Cabinet of Ministers had approved the proposal submitted by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to submit the report to Parliament and to take the necessary steps to implement the recommendations of the aforesaid report on Monday (18). The three-member PCoI consisting of retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne, retired Court of Appeal Judge Daya Chandrasiri Jayatilake, and retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando was appointed by the President in January 2020 to inquire into the alleged incidents of political victimisation that had allegedly occurred from 8 January 2015 to 16 November 2019, following investigations conducted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Special Investigation Unit of the Police. The Commission had investigated 1,971 complaints, including cases of politically victimised public officers during the aforementioned period. The final report of the PCoI was handed over to the President on 8 December 2020.
