Polls date to be decided on June 8

Election Commission (EC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya today announced that the general election date will be set next Monday (8). Deshapriya made these comments following a meeting that took place among EC members to discusses polls related issues. The Director General Health Services Dr Anil Jasinghe today submitted election health guidelines to the Polls body. Deshapriya speaking to reporters today said the new date for polls will be decided after the set of guidelines from the Health Ministry have been fully perused by the EC. The General Election was set to be held on the 25 April, but it was later postponed to 20 June in light of the COVID-19 outbreak in Sri Lanka.Several petitions were filed against the date set by the EC, however all petitions were dismissed by the Supreme Court today.
