The Central Environmental Authority of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Postal Department have taken steps to launch a National Electronic Waste Management Week from 5 October to  10 October which coincides with the World Postal Day which falls on 9 October under the theme “More than Post”. Post Master General (PMG) Ranjith Ariyaratne stated that during this week, electronic waste will be collected from households, covering the entire island and disposed temporarily at post offices, at a special media briefing chaired by Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera at the Department of Government Information today (30). Accordingly, the e-waste collected at home can be brought to the post office premises from 08.30 am to 4.30 pm during the postal week. Ariyaratne said that all post offices have been instructed to contact the offices and prepare a place to dispose the waste. He further stated that this program is organized with the objective of minimizing the harm caused to human beings, animals and the environment due to improper disposal of electronic waste. He said that all government agencies are bound by international development agreements to implement sustainable development goals in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and that the Postal Department carries out various programs annually to minimize the impact on the environment. He also mentioned that his department has made a huge contribution to the distribution of medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
