Postal services commence: Safety measures to be set before Vesak Poya

05 May 2020

Following a discussion with the Postmaster General, Joint Postal Trade Unions Front (JPTUF) and Union of Postal and Telecommunications Officers (UPTO) returned to work yesterday (4). Postal workers had agreed to commence work as the Postmaster General had promised to supply the requested personal protective equipment (PPE) and disinfect the post offices and sub post offices in the country. “Hopefully all post offices and sub post offices will be provided with the necessary equipment and we will be able to put in place the safety measures. We decided to report to work this week since the pension payments are to be carried out before Vesak Poya, and the distribution of medicine from government hospitals are taking place as well,” JPTUF Convenor K.M.C. Bandara said. It was observed that only a few of the post offices had received the necessary PPE for them to conduct their services. While the Postmaster General had instructed to purchase the necessary supplies, the instruction had not been followed through by some of the areas. “Following the discussion on Sunday (3), the Postmaster General promised that the supplies will be distributed to all the post offices and sub post offices before Vesak Poya. We have requested our district officers to closely monitor this and report back to us as to whether all the offices received the same,” UPTO Secretary H.K. Kariyawasam informed. By Sarah Hannan
