Power generation addressing power shortfall: Sub-Comm. report to Cabinet tomorrow

10 Apr 2021

  • Purchase of power plants, renewable energy from factories

  • Tenders to be called for massive renewable energy plants

The report of the Cabinet Sub-Committee appointed to take action on future power generation plans and proposed measures to mitigate possible lapses, will be submitted to Cabinet tomorrow (12), Power Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.   He told The Sunday Morning that the Sub-Committee has proposed different methods to minimise the lapses and that the Cabinet would therefore decide on the best method that should be applied.   The Sub-Committee comprising Ministers Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Bandula Gunawardana, and Dr. Ramesh Pathirana met last Monday (5) and finalised the report, Minister Alahapperuma said, adding that he had verbally submitted the proposals of the Sub-Committee at the previous cabinet meeting.   “Last week, the sub-committee meeting was concluded at around 4.30 p.m. and therefore, we didn’t have time to write the report. Therefore, I submitted the suggestions verbally,” he added.   According to the Minister, the suggestions of the Sub-Committee included the purchasing of power plants if possible, purchasing renewable energy from factories, as well as for the large-scale renewable energy plants to meet the demand until a new power plant is commissioned.   “The main issue we have is that we haven’t built new power plants for many years and a new power plant would come only in 2024, and until such time, there’s a lapse in electricity generation,” he noted, adding that the Sub-Committee had therefore suggested to go for tendering, if there are possible investors willing to invest in large-scale renewable energy plants, as well as to purchase renewable energy from factories which have storage facilities.
