Prasanna Ranatunga blames protestors for tourism drop

02 May 2022

  • Notes only 1,000 tourists per day compared to roughly 4,500 earlier
In a special media statement issued yesterday (2), Public Security and Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has claimed that tourist arrivals have declined due to the unrest in the country and that protests will not solve but aggravate the country’s economic crisis. “The tourism industry needs to be strengthened to address the current economic crisis in the country. We need to attract more tourists to this country. Tourists come to the country only if the country is peaceful and secure,” he stated. “Until the end of the war in 2009, tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka were minimal. When the war ended and the country was at peace, nearly 2.5 million tourists visited the country, which collapsed due to the Easter Sunday terror attacks of April 2019, and the Covid-19 epidemic of 2020. Although it has been able to recover over the past five months, where the number of tourists visiting the country in March exceeded 100,000 and the number of daily visitors was between 4,000 and 5,000, by now, that number has dwindled to a 1,000 a day.”  He said that those who are fighting against the Government should understand this situation. “If there is a genuine desire to solve the country’s economic crisis, the agitators should not act in such a way as to obstruct the avenues for resolving the country’s economic crisis, and therefore, I urge the activists to think realistically and support the solution to the current crisis,” stated Ranatunga. Speaking further, he added that the process of changing the Government of the country should take place in accordance with the Constitution. The Minister pointed out that agitating or forcing the incumbent President to resign from the Government or engaging in violent activities is not a solution to this problem, and that the country is heading further into an abyss due to such actions.
