Preliminary steps taken to stop importation of chillies

The Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage says that steps will be taken to stop the importation of chillies within the next three years. He points out that a special program has already been planned to produce chillies for consumption in the country. This was stated by the Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage addressing the media in Anuradhapura. "We have selected 2000 families in the Anuradhapura district and we hope to cultivate chillies in 1000 families. We are currently importing 100 percent chillies to Sri Lanka. The President's hope is to stop the importation of chillies completely within the next three years. Therefore, seven districts have been identified, one of which is Anuradhapura. We have identified 1000 families and are cultivating chillies on half an acre. We are providing assistance to each farmer at the rate of Rs. 350,000," he said. Meanwhile, Minister of State Lasantha Alagiyawanna says that the gas companies have agreed to record the weight of domestic gas cylinders in kilograms only in the future.
