Premadasa & Weerasekera debate Police actions to halt SJB protests

16 Nov 2021

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa in Parliament today (16), alleged that buses have been halted and turned around with SJB protesters who have been trying to enter Colombo from all parts of the island. The protests in several parts of Colombo were organised by the SJB against the Government, and Premadasa claimed that the buses were stopped and turned around at police check points which have been placed at roads which lead into the Colombo city. In response to Premadasa's allegations, Minister of Public security Sarath Weerasekera said that it was only done to prevent the spread of the covid virus. “The Police are only helping the health authorities by maintaining the regulations and guidelines which they have put into place to contain the pandemic. Instead of protesting, the Opposition should assist the government to fight the spread of the virus. But what is evident is that they are only helping the virus to destroy the government and the people,” said Weerasekera. When further accused by Premadasa that police officials had made visits to people and warned them not to attend the protests in Colombo, Weerasekera responded saying that the duty of the police to prevent chaos and trouble amongst the public. Additionally, Premadasa questioned Weerasekera if there would be a terror attack and if incase there was, what was the precautionary measures taken to prevent such an attack, to which Weerasekera confirmed that he can ensure the public that safety and security is of utmost priority whether there is to be a terror attack or not. During this debate, several SJB MP's were notably voicing their opinions on the same.
