During a meeting held with the representatives of Trade Unions at the Prime Minister’s residence today, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has assured that the East Container Terminal (ECT) at Colombo Port would be operated 100% by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).
Accordingly, the Prime Minister's Office said the Trade Unions have decided to call off the strike scheduled for tomorrow.
The Prime Minister stated that the government has no plans to sell or lease out any part of the ECT to foreign countries, and that its operations will be conducted by the Ports Authority.
The report submitted by Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardhana on this matter has stated that the foreign countries had not agreed to the terms and conditions that the Sri Lankan Government imposed.
This decision was taken following discussions with the representatives of the Ports Authority and the Trade Unions.
“The decision taken today will not be limited to words but action as well,” said Prime Minister Rajapaksa.
