07 Jul 2021

Arrangements are being made to use seaweed to produce fertilizers and nitrogen solutions required for organic farming stated the State Minister of Fisheries Kanchana Wijesekara today (07). Seaweed cultivation is currently active mainly in the Kilinochchi, Jaffna and Kalpitiya districts of the Northern Province. "In these places, kappaphycys seaweed species are cultivated. In the year 2020, 8 million tons of dry seaweed was dried and exported and in the year 2021, 16 tons of it has been exported," the Minister said in a statement. Under the Livelihood Development Program, it is planned to provide assistance to 200 beneficiaries to commence seaweed cultivation this year. At present, it has been identified that these seaweeds can be used for the production of organic fertilizer. A discussion was held recently with these seaweed exporters on how to use seaweed for future organic fertilizer production. The Minister said that arrangements will be made to use seaweed to produce fertilizers and nitrogen liquids required for organic farming.
