05 Apr 2021

According to a statement from the President’s Media Division, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed to completely ban the importation of palm oil with immediate effect from today (05). The Controller General of the Department of Import and Export Control has been advised to issue the relevant gazette order to give effect to this instruction, by the Secretary to the President P.B Jayasundera today (05) itself. Additionally, the Director-General of Customs has been informed of this decision and has been advised to refrain from clearing palm oil cargos at the Department of Customs. The statement also mentions that orders have been issued under the relevant laws to completely ban the cultivation of oil palm (katupol). As a result, companies and entities which cultivate oil palm shall be required to uproot these crops at the rate of 10% each time, replacing them with either rubber or other environmentally friendly crops. This is inline with the government’s intention of stopping the cultivation of oil palm and the consumption of palm oil completely.
