President confident of recovery through resilience of Sri Lankans

  • Places faith in public’s strength and resilience, international co-operation
At the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Leaders’ Summit held yesterday (30), President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he is confident that with the remarkable resilience of the Sri Lankan people, along with co-operation from international and regional partners, Sri Lanka will prevail to engineer rapid economic recovery. “The restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic to curtail the spread of the virus in the past two years seriously affected every sector of our economy. The loss of tourism and remittances from expatriate workers alongside the cost of healthcare programmes and the provision of welfare for those affected by the pandemic, combined with rising global inflation and our historic debt service obligations, have created a challenging economic situation for Sri Lanka today. However, I am confident that together with the remarkable strength and resilience of our people, tried and tested over time, and the co-operation of our regional and international partners, Sri Lanka will prevail over these difficulties and engineer rapid economic recovery,” said the President. The President especially appreciated the support of several BIMSTEC countries in this endeavour. The fifth BIMSTEC Summit, hosted by Sri Lanka this year, commenced in Colombo at the beginning of this week. The Leaders’ Summit was held virtually. President Rajapaksa also stressed the need to protect the BIMSTEC region from the threats of terrorism, religious extremism, and narcotics. During his address to the Summit, Indian Prime Minister Nardenra Modi too noted that greater priority must be given to regional security. “Developments in Europe over the last few weeks have raised questions about the stability of the world order. In this context, it has become essential to make BIMSTEC, as a regional order, more active,” said Premier Modi. Furthermore, Modi added that India will provide the BIMSTEC Secretariat with financial assistance of $ 1 million. “We hope that the assistance will aid in its important work as per our expectations and timelines,” he added. The BIMSTEC Charter was adopted at the Summit yesterday.
