  • Says CBSL Governor has been a ‘tower of strength’ amidst economic challenges
  • Denies asking Governor to step down and urges him to carry on his ‘all-important work’
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa stated yesterday (17) that he has the fullest confidence and trust in Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and that therefore, there is no reason whatsoever to request or seek his resignation. “Governor Cabraal enjoys my fullest confidence and trust and has been a tower of strength in responding to the grave economic challenges faced by the country,” the President was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the President’s Media Division (PMD) yesterday. The President was responding to The Morning’s lead story published yesterday (17) which reported that there is speculation that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal to step down. “We wish to categorically state that there is absolutely no truth in the news item that President Rajapaksa had asked Governor Cabraal to resign. Furthermore, the newspaper report that the IMF delegation had laid down such a condition is a total canard. The IMF did not discuss about officials and the talks covered only the monetary issues. The President and the Government have the fullest confidence in the CBSL Governor and there is no reason whatsoever to seek his resignation.” The President was further quoted in the press release stating that he had personally spoken to the Governor. “I have personally urged Governor Cabraal not to be discouraged by these mischievous and fake stories, and to continue his all-important work for the stability and growth of our country,” it said.
