President holds bilateral talks with Japanese PM

President Ranil Wickremesinghe held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo yesterday (28), the President’s Media Division (PMD) said. The meeting took place at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo. The Japanese Prime Minister had warmly welcomed President Wickremesinghe and extended his best wishes on his appointment to the Office of President. The two leaders held discussions on further strengthening relations between the two countries. President Wickremesinghe also called on Japan’s Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo yesterday. During his two-day official visit to Japan, the President also attended the funeral ceremony of former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo to pay his last respects to the assassinated leader. Having concluded his official two-day visit to Japan, President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday departed to the Philippines, where he is slated to chair the meeting of the Governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). While in the Philippines, President Wickremesinghe will hold discussions with his Philippine counterpart President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. and Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masatsugu Asakawa. President Wickremesinghe is scheduled to return to the island upon completing his official tour tomorrow (30).
