President leaves for China, no acting Defence Minister

13 May 2019

President Maithripala Sirisena left for China today without appointing an acting Defence Minister. A source at the President's office said that Sirisena had not appointed an acting Defence Minister before leaving for China today. Military sources said that the Defence Secretary will issue instructions on any defence related issue so there was no concern that an acting Defence Minister was not appointed. When contacted, Minister Lakshman Kiriella told The Sunday Morning that he was not aware if an acting Defence Minister was appointed or not as that is in the hands of the President.
