President names all-Lankan Port City Commission

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (31 May) appointed the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, with the membership being exclusively Sri Lankan, contrary to speculation that Chinese nationals would also be included. Accordingly, as exclusively reported by The Morning website on Saturday (29), President’s Counsel (PC) Gamini Marapana has been appointed as the Chairman of the Commission. The other list of member appointments are Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygale, Ministry of Water Supply Secretary Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrema, former Board of Investment (BOI) Chairman Saliya Wickramasuriya, Orel Corporation Managing Director (MD) Kushan Kodithuwakku, Mercantile Investment MD Gerard Ondaatjie, and McLarens Group Chairman Rohan De Silva. As per the recently enacted Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act, President Rajapaksa has the power to appoint the members of the Commission. The Act also states the Chairperson and members of the Commission can serve a maximum term of three years with the possibility of being reappointed thereafter. Chairman Marapana PC was the counsel for the intervenient petition filed by Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris in support of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Draft Bill recently, following a number of special determination petitions filed against the draft bill at the Supreme Court. He is the brother of Tilak Marapana PC, who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Good Governance or Yahapalana Government, and the father of Navin Marapana PC. He is a past pupil of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
