President proposes meeting of all nations’ Agriculture Ministers

President Ranil Wickremesinghe urged the UN Secretary General and Egypt, as the head of the COP27, to summon a meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of all countries to assess the food requirements of 2023 and 2024 and submit a report on the food situation, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced in a press release yesterday (7). “I urge the UN Secretary General and Egypt, as the head of the COP27, to call a meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture of all countries to assess the food requirements of 2023 and 2024 and submit a report on the food position. Working together with the multilaterals, sources of funding and a sustainable debt relief plan must be formulated. It is essential that this plan is finalised by February 2023 and taken up for implementation by the end of the first quarter of 2023,” he said. President Wickremesinghe had further warned that if this failed to see implementation, the damage caused to the political and social structures of countries will be irreparable. He had also highlighted the urgent need for compiling a medium-term plan to ensure global food security at COP28. President Wickremesinghe had made these remarks while participating at the Round Table discussion on food security at the ongoing COP27 Conference on Climate Change, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The President also met British Prime Minister Rishi Sunakon the sidelines of COP27 in Egypt, according to the President’s Media Division, and extended his warm greetings to the new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Meanwhile, President Wickremesinghe had also held bilateral meetings with Republic of Slovenia President Borut Pahor, and Republic of Korea Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Environment and Head of Delegation Na Kyung-won, on the sidelines of COP27 yesterday.
