President shuts down Colombo LRT project

24 Sep 2020

In a letter to the Minister of Transport, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa stated that the Colombo Light Rail Transit (LRT) project should be terminated, as it is too costly and isn't the appropriate cost-effective transport solution for urban Colombo infrastructure. The project will be terminated with immediate effect and the project offices will also be shut down. Meanwhile, a suitable transport solution is to be implemented in consultation with the Ministry of Urban Development and housing and the Department of National Planning of the Ministry of Finance. Officially launched in July 2019, the project was implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development (MMWD) under a public-private partnership. Construction of the first phase of the project was estimated to cost US $2.2bn and was scheduled to start in 2020. Commercial operations were expected to start in 2025.
