President to meet Power today

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to meet United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power this morning (11), it is learnt. The meeting is scheduled for 9.30 a.m. today at the Presidential Secretariat. The President is looking at discussing support from the US to finalise assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Sri Lanka and calling for more direct investments from the US. Power is also expected to discuss Sri Lanka’s human rights situation and the upcoming UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session, where the US plans to co-sponsor a new resolution on Sri Lanka as one of the country’s Core Group members, according to diplomatic sources. Power is a former US Ambassador to the UN from 2013 until 2017 and has paid great attention to issues related to Sri Lanka’s human rights and accountability. She arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (10) on a two-day official visit and announced that USAID would make an additional allocation of $ 40 million to assist local farmers.
