Presidential polls 2019: Ex-Army Chief to enter the fray

By Sarah Hannan Former Army Commander Mahesh W. Senanayake is to formally declare today that he will be contesting the upcoming presidential election. Senanayake will come forward as the candidate of the National Peoples Movement (NPM). Speaking to The Sunday Morning, an NPM spokesperson confirmed that retired Army General Mahesh Senanayake will be presented as their national presidential candidate at a public gathering to be staged at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo this afternoon. Senanayake had earlier hinted that he had been invited by sections of civil society to contest the election. He had said that he will not be representing the main political parties in the country. Prior to his recent retirement, he served as the Commander of the Army holding the rank of Lieutenant General from 2017 to 2019. In recognition of his nearly four-decade service to the Army, he was promoted to the rank of General in August.
