President's Office to write to polls body over graduate training suspension

05 Mar 2020

The President's Office is to write to the Election Commission (EC) to reconsider its decision to suspend the training programme for newly recruited graduates. This was revealed during a meeting held between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Media heads at the Presidential Secretariat today. Rajapaksa said that a letter will be sent to the Polls body today to sort out the issue. He added that the graduate appointments were done before the Parliament was dissolved and it was not targeted at the forthcoming general elections. Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya had yesterday (4) ordered the Public Administration, Internal Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry Secretary to suspend the training programme for newly recruited graduates to the state sector until a week after the election results were published. Deshapriya had stated that complaints had been received regarding this matter and that recruiting these graduates would amount to promoting political agendas.
