President's security increased as precautionary measure

18 Oct 2018

President Maithripala Sirisena's security has been increased as a precautionary measure as investigations continue over an alleged plot to kill him. Two senior advisers of the President told reporters today that the alleged threat on the life of the President was being taken seriously. Presidential adviser Shiral Lakthilaka said that there was a "political attempt" to suppress the whole issue. He said that there is talk of a foreigner being involved in the plot to kill the President and there are attempts to use that claim to disregard the whole threat. Lakthilaka said that the threat to kill the President is serious and they had faith in the authorities to properly investigate the allegation. Presidential adviser Sarath Kongahage said that in the past former Presidents had been killed or attacked in Sri Lanka with the assistance of people close to them.
