Pressure builds on TNA-Govt. nexus

23 Jul 2019

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is under pressure to ensure the Government delivers on its promises after the TNA saved the Government from being defeated by a no-confidence vote in Parliament recently. The TNA voted against the No-confidence Motion (NCM) put forward by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on the Government over its failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks. Speaking ahead of the vote during the debate on the motion, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan said that there was no doubt that the Government must be condemned over its failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks. However, he said there was concern that if the Government loses the NCM, it will be removed from office. He also said that if there was a Government change now, there is no clarity regarding what the policy of the new government would be. As a result, he said the TNA could not support moves to remove the current Government. However, it later came to light that the Government had talks with the TNA prior to the vote and assured that it would resolve the Kalmunai issue and other key issues faced by the Tamils. In Kalmunai, the TNA has been pushing for a separate Tamil administration to be established, and the Government had promised to meet this demand by appointing a separate accountant first. However, as of last Thursday, the accountant had not been appointed and this had created a rift between the Government and the TNA. Also, last week, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had assured the Tamils that a political solution to the national issue will be implemented in two years. Speaking at an event in Jaffna, the Prime Minister said that several steps had been taken to ensure a political solution to the national issue. However, he said the efforts had stalled as the Government did not have the majority it needed to complete the process. The Prime Minister, however, assured that over the next two years, a political solution will be given to the people. Some Tamil political parties, however, have serious doubts over a political solution being implemented. Among them are some members of the TNA itself. TNA member and People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) Leader Dharmalingam Siddarthan said that by saying a political solution will be implemented in two years, the Government is admitting that it will not be done by the current regime. Siddarthan told The Sunday Morning that no government was really genuine in its undertaking to ensure a political solution through power devolution. He said that successive governments had assured even India that powers will be fully devolved to the provinces, but the commitments were never met. Asked if India should be urged to put pressure on the Sri Lankan Government to ensure devolution of powers, Siddarthan said he does not think India will exert such pressure anymore. “After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, India has not shown too much interest in the Sri Lankan issue. So I really don’t think there will be any pressure as such from India,” he said. Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) Leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam said the Government is attempting to mislead the Tamils by assuring a political solution in two years. He said the Tamils are not prepared to listen to the Government anymore as past assurances were also not met. Ponnambalam also questioned the relationship between the TNA and the Government. Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) Secretary General Nallathamby Srikantha said that the TNA must make use of the opportunities at hand to ensure the Tamil issues are addressed. He warned that if the TNA failed to ensure the Government meets its commitments to the Tamils, then the clock will start ticking for the TNA. Former TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran said the Government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe now seems to know the art of deceiving the Tamils. He said that clearly, the Government knows there will be a change of administration by the end of this year with elections due, so assuring a political solution is misleading.
